Experience the latest Pennsylvania traffic updates effortlessly on your smartphone with 511PA, offered by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). 511PA delivers real-time, hands-free traffic alerts for all PennDOT roadways in Pennsylvania and major routes in neighboring states such as NJ and WV, with additional coverage continuously being added.

To begin, activate the application before commencing your journey. By leveraging your phone’s GPS and the extensive data from the PA, NJ, and WV travel information system, 511PA detects your proximity to congestion, accidents, or other traffic disturbances without any need for manual interaction.

Upon detecting an incident or traffic delay nearby, 511PA issues an audible advisory. There is no need to read messages or navigate through screens; simply rely on the alerts while keeping your focus on the road.

By default, 511PA broadcasts advisories within a 10-mile radius, but users have the flexibility to adjust this range from one to 500 miles. The app will cyclically repeat advisories every 20 minutes while you are within range of an incident, and you can customize the frequency of these repetitions based on your preferences. Additionally, users can choose to hear advisories from all directions or solely from their current route and filter out specific advisory types by state or roadway category.

The application provides audio player controls for Play, Pause, Stop, Skip, and Replay All, emphasizing that these controls should not be manipulated while driving. If a call interrupts a travel alert playback and your plan does not allow simultaneous data and voice usage, the system will pause the alert and resume it once the call ends.

No registration is required to utilize the app as 511PA functions anonymously, without collecting any personal or device-specific data. By default, the app may send your device-determined speed and location to improve real-time traffic reporting capabilities; however, users can opt out by selecting a radio button in the settings whenever launching the app.

Utilizing Information Logistics’ patent-pending "Open Microphone Platform," which harnesses queue-driven streaming technology alongside your device's GPS, this app enhances your commuting experience with reliable traffic information.

It is crucial to note that this application should only be accessed when not operating a motor vehicle. Users are expected to engage with the application responsibly and refrain from using mobile devices while driving. Complying with the Commonwealth Motor Vehicle Code is advised as it prohibits operating a vehicle while interacting with text-based communications through wireless devices while in motion.
